UFC 332 Is a Fight Night Wearing a Number. I Counted.

UFC 332 goes off on October 3 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, with Natalia Silva against Wang Cong for the women's flyweight title Valentina Shevchenko vacated this month. This week the card has become a punchline.

Jokes are easy, so I did the boring thing instead. I took every numbered UFC event since the start of 2016, 136 of them finished plus UFC 332, and counted who was actually on each card. The yardstick is the UFC's own media rankings as they stood on fight day, the same board the promotion publishes every week.

The short version: UFC 332 is not the worst numbered card of the modern era. It is something the UFC should find more embarrassing than that. On paper it is an ordinary 2026 Fight Night with a number painted on the poster.

The count

Three fighters ranked in the top 10 of their division: Silva (1), Wang (8) and Deiveson Figueiredo (9 at bantamweight). One in the top five. Six ranked anywhere, and that six only gets there by counting Marcus McGhee at 15 on the prelims and Johnny Walker, who is ranked 13th at light heavyweight and is fighting at heavyweight on this card.

Zero reigning champions. Not in the main event, not in the co-main, not anywhere.

Only one numbered card in more than ten years had fewer top-10 fighters. Break the tie on top-five fighters, then on total ranked fighters, and UFC 332 is the second-emptiest numbered event since 2016.

The cards that were worse

The emptiest numbered cards since 2016, sorted by top-10 fighters, then top-5, then ranked fighters:

UFC 234 is the worst card on this list, and it is not close. One top-10 fighter on the whole night (Israel Adesanya, ranked sixth), nobody in the top five, no title fight, and a 15th-ranked Anderson Silva across from him in the main event. If anyone tells you UFC 332 is the worst numbered event ever, send them the UFC 234 card and let them sit with it.

UFC 243 and UFC 279 were weaker from top to bottom as well. Our own Power Index, a results-based strength rating I am using here for exactly one job, puts both among the four weakest numbered cards since 2016 when you average every fighter on them. UFC 332 is dead median by the same measure: 62 cards weaker, 74 stronger. The undercard is not the problem. Kopylov, Gautier, Pinas and Dos Anjos are proper UFC fighters. The top of the poster is the problem.

And look at who the company is. UFC 318 and UFC 279 sold names that did not need a ranking next to them: Holloway and Poirier, Diaz and Ferguson. UFC 243 and UFC 301 both had a reigning champion in the main event. UFC 332 has none of those things.

One thing fell off this card

This is where the UFC has its best defense, so let me give it in full. UFC 332 was supposed to be headlined by Valentina Shevchenko defending the women's flyweight title against Natalia Silva. In early September Shevchenko pulled out hurt and vacated the belt. Her coach, Pavel Fedotov, said it was ligament damage in her shoulder and back and that the belt was given up only until she recovers (via Yahoo Sports), and ESPN reported she could be out for up to a year. The UFC made Silva vs Wang Cong the new main event, for the vacant title.

That is bad luck, and nobody books around torn ligaments. But run the count again with Shevchenko back in the main event and Wang out of it, which is the row in italics above. The swap is one top-10 fighter for another, so the card still has three. It gains a champion and a second top-five fighter, and it would still be the fifth-emptiest numbered card since 2016. The injury took away the champion. It did not take away the depth, because the depth was never there.

Below the main event, our change log shows no bout pulled from UFC 332. Everything under the headliner is the card as it was drawn.

The co-main event is the tell. Figueiredo is a former flyweight champion who is 1-4 in his last five, coming off losses to Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong. The median line across 19 sportsbooks has him at +488 against Payton Talbott at -700, and our model is only a little kinder, giving him 20 percent. On a numbered card, the second-biggest fight of the night is priced like a showcase for the prospect.

A vacant belt and a No. 8

Valentina Shevchenko last fought at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025. By her own camp's estimate she is most of a year from fighting again, which is why the belt is up for grabs on October 3, and why this main event matters more than the rest of the card combined. Whoever wins walks out as champion of a division whose last champion never lost the belt in the cage.

Let's get this out of the way first: Natalia Silva deserves to headline. She is 8-0 in the UFC, her last four wins came over Viviane Araujo, Jessica Andrade, Alexa Grasso and Rose Namajunas, and she sits at No. 1 in the division and No. 4 on the women's pound-for-pound rankings. She was the right opponent for Shevchenko. None of this is on her.

Wang Cong is ranked eighth. She is 5-1 in the UFC. Her best win, over Tracy Cortez (ranked eighth at the time), came on the early prelims of UFC 329 in July. Five of her six UFC fights were on the prelims or the early prelims. Her only main-card appearance ended in a submission loss to Gabriella Fernandes, who is now ranked 14th. Her next fight is a five-round main event with a belt on the line.

To be sure, part of the division was spoken for. Alexa Grasso and Manon Fiorot, ranked second and third, both fought on September 12. Erin Blanchfield (fourth) and Jasmine Jasudavicius (seventh) are booked for October 17. Namajunas, fifth, already lost to Silva in January. Our model, for what it is worth, calls Silva vs Wang a coin flip at 50 percent, while the books have Silva at -210. Wang may well be better than her résumé.

That is not the point. The point is that when the champion went down about four weeks out, the UFC had nothing on a numbered card in Salt Lake City to catch it. The replacement headliner is a No. 8 who was on the early prelims in July, and the next fight down is a former champion priced at 7-to-1.

2026, the year the champions stopped showing up

UFC 332 is not a one-off. Here is every numbered card of 2026:

From 2016 through 2025, 18 of 128 numbered cards had no reigning champion on them, roughly one in seven. In 2026 it is five of nine. Hand UFC 332 its champion back and it is still four of nine. The average numbered card has also slipped from 7.7 top-10 fighters to 6.4.

Now put UFC 332 next to the shows that do not get a number:

The 23 regular Fight Nights the UFC has run this year, leaving out the special June 15 card, averaged 3.0 top-10 fighters and 5.5 ranked fighters. UFC 332 has 3 and 6. Thirteen of those 23 Fight Nights had at least as many top-10 fighters. Three weeks before UFC 332, Noche UFC had nine ranked fighters, seven of them in the top 10, and nobody called it a pay-per-view.

Who pays for the number

In the United States, numbered cards are not pay-per-view anymore. Since the move to Paramount+, every numbered event and Fight Night streams inside the same subscription. That cuts both ways. American fans are not paying extra for UFC 332. But the deal also removed the one thing that used to force a numbered card to justify itself: somebody had to decide it was worth buying.

I cannot prove the deal is why 2026's numbered cards carry fewer champions. I can point out that the incentive to stack them is gone, and that the numbers above moved in the direction you would expect.

The pay-per-view has not disappeared everywhere, either. According to our how-to-watch listings, numbered main cards are still sold as pay-per-view in Canada on Sportsnet+ and in the UK and Ireland on TNT Sports Box Office. Fans there will be asked to pay a premium for a card with as many top-10 fighters as an average Fight Night.

UFC 234 keeps its crown as the worst numbered card of the modern era, and UFC 332 will not take it. Silva and Wang might even steal the night. But the number on a UFC poster used to tell you a champion was in the building. On October 3 in Salt Lake City, it just tells you what comes after 331.

How I counted: every UFC event with a number in its name since January 1, 2016 (UFC 233 was never held), 137 cards in all, with cancelled bouts left out. Ranks are the UFC media rankings in force on fight day, division boards only; pound-for-pound lists are excluded and a champion is the No. 0 slot. Fight Night figures cover the 23 completed 2026 Fight Nights through September 12. UFC 332 is counted as booked on September 23, and the card can still change; the "as first booked" row swaps Wang Cong for Shevchenko, ranked as champion, and changes nothing else.
