What does strikes landed per minute mean in MMA?
Strikes landed per minute (SLpM) is a fighter's significant strikes landed divided by the minutes they have spent fighting, so fighters with short and long careers can be compared on one scale.
How it works
Strikes landed per minute = significant strikes landed ÷ minutes fought. The time is cage time, the real length of each fight, so a first-round knockout only adds the minutes it lasted.
Rarer events are counted per 15 minutes, the length of a three-round fight: takedowns, knockdowns and submission attempts per 15 minutes are the count × 15 ÷ minutes fought. Strikes absorbed per minute (SApM) uses the significant strikes opponents landed, and striking differential is strikes landed per minute minus strikes absorbed per minute.
Worked example
A fighter has landed 540 significant strikes in 120 minutes of fighting: 540 ÷ 120 = 4.50 strikes landed per minute. Over the same 120 minutes they completed 10 takedowns: 10 × 15 ÷ 120 = 1.25 takedowns per 15 minutes.
Good to know
Short careers make these rates noisy, which is why UFCalendar's career leaderboards only rank fighters with at least 5 fights.
