When do UFC fighters get washed? 16,429 fights name two culprits
We tracked 16,429 UFC appearances to find when fighters get washed. Age and knockdowns absorbed predict the fall; cage time and strikes eaten do not.
Every fight week somebody gets the word hung on them. Washed. It arrives the moment a former contender loses two straight, and it is usually delivered by the eyeball test, which is to say by vibes. I wanted the actual answer to a question fans argue about constantly and nobody bothers to measure: when do fighters get washed, and what does the washing? Is it age? Octagon mileage? The strikes they have eaten? The knockdowns they have survived?
So we measured it. We took 16,429 UFC appearances since 2005 from our own results database, and for every single walk to the cage we computed the fighter's odometer as it stood the moment the door closed: how old he was that night, how many UFC fights he already had, how many minutes of cage time he had logged, how many head strikes he had absorbed across his whole UFC run (from the official per-fight stats), how many times he had been knocked down, and how many times he had been finished with strikes. Then we watched what happened next.
Four suspects. Two convictions. And the two that walk free are the two everybody blames.
Suspect one: birthdays. Guilty, and it is not close.
Age is the only variable in the whole study that produces a smooth, relentless, monotonic decline. There is no prime plateau anywhere in the data. Every three-year band is worse than the one before it, starting immediately:

Read that last column twice. A fighter under 25 has a roughly 1 in 10 chance of getting stopped with strikes on any given night. Past 37 it is 1 in 4. The win rate does not fall off a cliff at some magic birthday, which is the part that surprised me. It just erodes, about two points per band, every band, from the day a fighter is old enough to rent a car. The cliff narrative is wrong. The escalator narrative is right, and the escalator only goes down.
Suspect two: the odometer. Innocent, mostly. And this is where I owe a reconciliation, because we have written about experience before.
Yesterday we published a piece showing that Octagon experience is an anti-predictor: across three years of UFC results, the fighter with more UFC fights won only 43.9 percent of the time. If mileage does not wash fighters, how can experience predict losing?
Because the experience gap was never really about experience. It is an age gap wearing experience's clothes. Cage time on its own does almost nothing here: fighters with 120 to 179 career minutes win 52.0 percent, statistically identical to fighters with under 30 minutes at 48.7 percent, and the number only sags once you pass 180 career minutes (44.1 percent), a threshold almost nobody reaches while young. Fight count tells the same story. Young fighters who pile up appearances keep winning, because the only way to get booked that often, that early, is to be very good. Mileage arrives bundled with birthdays, and the birthdays do the damage. When our earlier piece found the more experienced fighter losing, it was mostly finding the older fighter losing. The two articles are not in tension. The second one explains the first.
Suspect three: strikes eaten. Innocent, and here the data gets genuinely weird.
The most intuitive theory of washing is accumulation: every head strike is a withdrawal from a finite account, and one day the account is empty. The data says the opposite. Among fighters 34 and older, the ones who had absorbed the fewest career head strikes (under 300) got knocked out in 23.5 percent of their fights. The ones who had absorbed 800 or more got knocked out in 18.5 percent. The heaviest-hit fighters were the hardest to finish, and the same inversion shows up in every age band.
That is not a license to eat punches. It is survivorship, and it is the finding. You only get the chance to absorb 800 head strikes in a UFC career if your chin holds up through the first 400. The fragile guys never reach the high-mileage bucket, because the sport already removed them. Durability is not something volume takes away from you. Durability is the entry fee for accumulating volume at all. The account theory of the chin has it backwards: absorbed volume is not the withdrawal, it is the proof of the balance.
There is an obvious objection here, and we tested it: maybe the low-volume group only looks fragile because fragile fighters get knocked out early, before they ever accumulate strikes. So restrict the sample to fighters who had never been knocked out or even knocked down in the UFC, fighters whose totals nothing truncated. The pattern survives: 12.6 percent KO risk for clean-chin fighters who had absorbed under 150 head strikes, 8.2 percent for clean-chin fighters past 300. Getting hit a lot per minute is a mild warning sign on its own, but even that signal disappears once knockdowns enter the picture. The strikes never told the story. The knockdowns did.
Suspect four: getting dropped. Guilty. This is the real odometer, and every reading on it is permanent.
Career knockdowns endured is the cleanest damage signal in the study. A fighter who has never been dropped in the UFC gets stopped with strikes in 13.9 percent of his fights. After five or more career knockdowns it is 25.3 percent. Prior KO losses are even harsher: after a fourth career KO loss, the chance the next fight also ends in a KO loss is 29.3 percent, more than double the never-stopped baseline of 13.8 percent.
And unlike the strike-volume story, this one survives the age control. Take only fighters 34 and older: the never-dropped ones get stopped 19.1 percent of the time, the ones dropped three or more times get stopped 27.5 percent of the time. That last cell, old and previously dropped, is the single worst square on the whole board. Age and knockdowns are not the same suspect twice. They are accomplices.
The chin does not heal, either. Among fighters 30 and older, being KO'd within the previous year pushes the next-fight KO risk to 23.4 percent. Three or more years of recovery time brings it back only to 19.4 percent, still well above the 16.0 percent of fighters who were never stopped at all. Time off discounts the damage. Nothing erases it.

Michael Bisping endured 12 career knockdowns, tied for the most in our database, and went 7-4 after the fifth one, including the title win. Neil Magny has endured 11 and has won 59 percent of the 22 fights since his fifth knockdown. Keith Jardine endured 10 and went 1-4 after his fifth. The rule is not that a dropped fighter is finished. The rule is that the odds tilt, fight after fight, and they never tilt back.
So when does it actually happen? We looked at the 485 retired fighters in our database with at least eight UFC fights and timestamped each one's career-best form (using our Power Index rating history, our own derived metric, purely as a timestamp). The median fighter peaked at age 30.6. Half of all peaks landed between 28.0 and 33.2. The median last fight came at 34.6, and the median fighter got 3.4 years between his career-best night and his last one.
Three and a half years. That is the typical distance between the top of the mountain and the exit. And the shape of that stretch is brutal: after the peak, the average retired fighter won 30.8 percent of his remaining fights, and more than a quarter of them (25.9 percent) ended in a KO loss.
You know these stories by name. Tony Ferguson went 0-8 after his 2019 peak. Chris Weidman went 3-8 after 2015 with seven KO losses. Donald Cerrone went 4-10 after the end of 2016. Junior Dos Santos went 6-8 with seven KO losses. Anderson Silva went 1-7 after October 2012, and Silva is the exception that proves everything else: his peak came at 37.5, an age at which the table above says he should have been a 24.6 percent KO risk, and he spent a decade laughing at that number before it collected.
The fighters who beat the curve share a profile, and it is not a mystery. Daniel Cormier went 5-2 after 37. Demian Maia went 9-5. Francisco Trinaldo went 11-5. Glover Teixeira went 8-4 and won a title at 42. Randy Couture went 12-8. Wrestlers and grapplers, nearly all of them, fighters whose style spends birthdays instead of brain cells. The aging curve is not one curve. It is a striker's curve and a grappler's curve, and only one of them has a cliff at the end.
Here is the part that stays with me. The sport already knows all of this. Not in the aggregate way we just computed it, but in the individual way that matters: every matchmaker can count a fighter's KO losses, and every commission can too. The number that predicts a 29.3 percent chance of another stoppage loss is sitting right there in the record, next to the fighter's name, every time a bout agreement gets signed.
