UFC Shanghai results: Song Yadong knocks out Umar Nurmagomedov

The betting markets had Umar Nurmagomedov at roughly -621 to beat Song Yadong. They had Yan Xiaonan at -147 to beat Denise Gomes. They had Xiong Jing Nan, a reigning ONE world champion, at +183 against a woman with eight UFC fights and no ranking. All three of those fights ended in a knockout, and all three of them ended with the wrong name on the winning side of the ledger.

UFC Shanghai was a card built to showcase Chinese and Asian talent at the Oriental Sports Center, and it did that. It just did it by breaking the three most established names on the bill.

Song Yadong knocked out the No. 3 bantamweight in the world

Song Yadong was ranked sixth. Umar Nurmagomedov was ranked third, behind only Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O'Malley in the chase for Petr Yan's belt. At 1:48 of the second round, Song stopped him, and the division rearranged itself around that.

It is worth being precise about what happened to Umar, because his record does not carry many of these. He has two career losses. The first was a five-round decision to Merab Dvalishvili in January 2025, the kind of loss that costs you a title but not your standing. The second is this one, and it is the first time in his career that anybody has finished him. He had beaten Cory Sandhagen, Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo on the way here, all by decision, all in the manner of a man who was going to grind his way to a second title shot.

Song, meanwhile, has now beaten Figueiredo and Umar back to back after losing to Yan and O'Malley. He collected Performance of the Night for it, his eighth career post-fight bonus. There is no obvious argument for who the next bantamweight challenger is, and Song has just removed one of the two men who had a cleaner claim than him.

Denise Gomes finished Yan Xiaonan in a round

Yan Xiaonan was the fourth-ranked strawweight and the twelfth-ranked woman on the pound-for-pound board. Denise Gomes was fourteenth in the division. The fight lasted 4:49.

Gomes has now won five in a row, going back to a split decision over Eduarda Moura in June 2024, then Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Elise Reed and Tecia Pennington. Three of those were decisions, which made the market treat her as a grinder who had been beating the lower half of the division. She knocked out a top-five strawweight in the first round instead.

For Yan it is the second stoppage loss of her UFC career, after Carla Esparza caught her in 2021, and it comes with a shape that is harder to argue away than the previous three. She lost to Zhang Weili for the title in 2024 and to Virna Jandiroba on the cards in April 2025, and both of those were competitive fights against elite opposition. This was not competitive. At 37, that matters.

Xiong Jing Nan is 0-2 in the UFC

The signing was one of the more interesting cross-promotional moves of the year. Xiong Jing Nan had held the ONE strawweight title since 2018 and had beaten Angela Lee twice. She has now lost both of her UFC fights, a decision to Angela Hill in May and a first-round knockout to Julia Polastri on Friday, and she was the betting underdog for this one at +183.

There is a version of this that reads as a promotion's weight class being softer than advertised. There is another version where a 38-year-old is being asked to adapt to a different cage, a different rule set and a different level of athlete inside eight months of debuting. Both can be true. Neither is good news.

Kai Asakura is figuring it out, two years late

Kai Asakura started his UFC run in the worst way available: a title shot against Alexandre Pantoja in his debut, submitted in the second round, then a submission loss to Tim Elliott eight months later. Two fights, two losses, and a former RIZIN bantamweight champion who arrived with a genuine claim to being the biggest draw in Japanese MMA looking, in the space of a year, like a marketing decision rather than a sporting one. That is a hard hole to climb out of at 32, in a division where the UFC has no shortage of younger bodies to promote instead.

He has now knocked out two straight, Cameron Smotherman in the first round in May and Aoriqileng at 34 seconds of round two on Friday. Thirty-four seconds. He was a -463 favorite and it was over almost before the second round started. The pattern in Asakura's career, going back through RIZIN to the wins over Juan Archuleta and Yuki Motoya, is that he hits people extremely hard early and occasionally gets caught on the mat if the fight goes long. The UFC found the mat part first, twice, and gave the impression it had learned everything worth knowing about him. It had not.

The rest of the card

Ce Liu made his UFC debut against Levi Rodrigues Jr., who took the light heavyweight bout on short notice after Junior Tafa withdrew, and knocked him out at 4:26 of the first round. It won Fight of the Night, which means Rodrigues left with a $100,000 check attached to a loss.

Bilal Hasan stopped Nilson Rojas in the second round for Performance of the Night. Sumudaerji beat Alex Perez 29-28 on all three cards, from Ben Cartlidge, Vito Paolillo and Clemens Werner. Rei Tsuruya submitted Kevin Borjas at 4:14 of the first, which is the cleaner half of the flyweight double bill we wrote about before the card.

And then there is the one people will argue about. Sean Woodson beat Jack Jenkins by split decision, with Cezary Wojciechowski and Vito Paolillo scoring 29-28 Woodson and Clemens Werner scoring 29-28 Jenkins. Of the 95 fan scorecards submitted for that fight, 57 had Jenkins and 38 had Woodson. That is 60 percent of the people who watched it closely enough to score it disagreeing with the official result, and it is the sort of gap that ends up on our Robbery Index.

What it means

Five of the six main card fights ended inside the distance, ten of the thirteen completed bouts did, and five underdogs won across the night. Both of the fighters the UFC imported from other promotions to headline this expansion into Asia went in opposite directions on the same night, and the man the division had penciled in as its next challenger is now looking at a rebuild.

The bantamweight title picture on Friday morning had Merab Dvalishvili, Sean O'Malley and Umar Nurmagomedov queued behind Petr Yan. By Friday night it had a man who has now collected eight post-fight bonuses and has never fought for the belt.
