What is implied probability in MMA odds?

Implied probability is the chance of winning that a price represents: 1 divided by the decimal odds.

How it works

From decimal odds: 1 ÷ odds. From American odds: for a favourite at −X, X ÷ (X + 100); for an underdog at +X, 100 ÷ (X + 100).

The two fighters' implied probabilities add up to more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker's margin, also called the vig or overround. Dividing each fighter's implied probability by the total removes it and gives the fair (no-vig) probability, which adds up to exactly 100%.

Worked example

Fighter A is −150 and fighter B is +130. A's implied probability is 150 ÷ 250 = 60.0%; B's is 100 ÷ 230 = 43.5%. Together they make 103.5%, a 3.5-point margin. The fair probabilities are 60.0 ÷ 103.5 = 58.0% and 43.5 ÷ 103.5 = 42.0%.
