DWCS 95 results: LaGrange upsets Ariano, four first-round finishes
DWCS 95 results: Preston LaGrange knocked out Nell Ariano as a +420 underdog, one of four first-round finishes at the Meta Apex. How the model and market did.
Four first-round finishes, four unbeaten records gone, and a main event the betting market had all but closed the book on. That was Dana White's Contender Series 95 on Tuesday night at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Only one of the five fights reached a second round, and that one went the full fifteen minutes.
Five of the ten fighters walked in without a professional loss. One of them walked out that way.
The story of the night is a light heavyweight fight that was booked four days out, with a man who was not supposed to be in it.
The upset
Preston LaGrange def. Nell Ariano, KO, round 1, 2:22 (light heavyweight). LaGrange replaced Ivan Gnizditskiy, and the swap reached our card on October 2. When the betting market first priced the new fight on Monday, LaGrange was +172. By the first bell on Tuesday he was +420, and at the peak he touched +429. Almost every hour of the week, the market got more certain that Ariano would win. Take the bookmakers' margin out of that closing price and it gave LaGrange about 18 percent.
Our model never went that far. Its final number had LaGrange at 42.9 percent. It still had Ariano winning, so I am not going to dress that up as a call. But the gap between 18 and 43 is the whole fight in two numbers: the market saw an unbeaten prospect against a short-notice replacement and kept walking the price out, and the model saw something much closer to an actual contest.
It was not much of one in the end. Ariano got one takedown from three attempts and held 1:17 of control, and on the feet he landed three significant strikes from eight. LaGrange landed 12 of 19 with a knockdown, and Marc Goddard stopped it at 2:22. LaGrange goes to 7-1. Ariano, 6-0 coming in, is 6-1.
So, -577. That happened.
The rest of the card
On to the other four:
Matheus Soares def. Ryuho Miyaguchi, KO, round 1, 1:04 (bantamweight). The quickest night's work, and the one nobody doubted. Soares opened Monday at -210 and closed at -523, and our model had him at 57.4 percent, the same side with far less conviction. He landed 20 significant strikes from 31, 16 of them to the head, plus a knockdown, against five from Miyaguchi. Goddard again. Soares is 22 years old and 12-2, which is a lot of fights for 22. Miyaguchi drops to 7-2.
Roque Conceição def. Alexander Chavez, submission, round 1, 3:36 (flyweight). The market changed its mind about this one. Conceição opened Monday as a +152 underdog and closed at -111, near enough a pick'em, and our model had him at 55.1 percent. Chavez won the grappling exchange you would expect to matter, a takedown from his only attempt and 49 seconds of control, but Conceição outlanded him 22 to 13, attempted the only two submissions of the fight, and finished it with Herb Dean watching at 3:36. This was his second trip to this show. On Contender Series 85 in October 2025 he lost to Imanol Rodríguez by first-round TKO at 2:14. A year later he is 12-3, and Chavez's 9-0 is now 9-1.
Salhahuddin Everett def. Ozzy Martin, KO, round 1, 1:56 (welterweight). The only unbeaten-against-unbeaten fight on the card, so one zero was always going. Everett landed a knockdown and 19 of 39 significant strikes. Martin was not far off on volume at 16 of 31, six of them to the body, and it did not matter. The market had Everett all week, -172 on Monday and -122 at the bell. Our model leaned the other way, Martin at 52.3 percent, and was wrong. Everett is 5-0 and the only fighter on this card who still has a perfect record. Martin is 4-1.
Alivia Bierley def. Summer Onley, unanimous decision (women's bantamweight). The opener, and the only fight the judges touched. Onley was the favorite all week, as short as -225 at one point and -158 at the bell. Our model went against the market and had Bierley at 52.6 percent, and this is the one where it gets to collect. Bierley outlanded her 47 to 33 on significant strikes, took her down twice from four attempts and held 2:42 of control to Onley's 1:12. Tony Weeks scored it 30-27, Sal D'Amato and Michael Bell 29-28. Onley's 6-0 becomes 6-1. Bierley is 6-1 too.
How the numbers did
I did not run a preview with picks for this card, so there is no ledger of my own to confess this week. The model and the market get one instead.
| Fight | Model, final | Price at the bell | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| LaGrange vs Ariano | LaGrange 42.9% | LaGrange +420 | LaGrange, KO 1 |
| Soares vs Miyaguchi | Soares 57.4% | Soares -523 | Soares, KO 1 |
| Conceição vs Chavez | Conceição 55.1% | Conceição -111 | Conceição, sub 1 |
| Everett vs Martin | Everett 47.7% | Everett -122 | Everett, KO 1 |
| Bierley vs Onley | Bierley 52.6% | Bierley +132 | Bierley, decision |
On winners, it is a draw. The market's closing favorite won three of five (Soares, Conceição, Everett). The model's side won three of five (Soares, Conceição, Bierley). They split the two fights where they disagreed, and both had Ariano.
Score it on how much probability each put on the people who actually won, and the model comes out ahead: an average of 51.1 percent per winner against the market's 48.7, once the margin is taken out of the prices. Almost all of that is LaGrange, where the model was about 25 points closer to being right than the market was.
The honest footnote is that the model never put more than 57.4 percent on anyone all night. That is either wisdom or cowardice, depending on the week. On a night when a -577 favorite got knocked out, it looked like wisdom.
Where the season stands
Through nine cards, the 2026 Contender Series has 32 finishes in 44 fights, 72.7 percent, and 21 of those 44 never reached a second round. Tuesday put four into that last column in one night. Last week's card finished all four of its fights too.
Who got a contract is the promotion's call, and nothing in our records says who did, so I will not guess.
Contender Series 96 is next Tuesday, October 13, with Douglas da Lapa against Davi Cabral at middleweight on top, and Ilias Bulaid vs Erick Visconde, the featherweight fight that fell off Contender Series 94 at the last minute, finally on a card that might keep it. Ariano was 6-0 and -577 on Tuesday. Records and prices are both just opinions about the past.
