DWCS 91 lost two matchups in ten days, and nobody announced it
DWCS 91 card changes: Martin Kozak and Colton Loud both lost their booked opponents days before Tuesday's Contender Series card. Our change log has the order.
Two of the five fights on Tuesday's Dana White's Contender Series 91 are not the fights that were booked. Both men kept their slot; both men lost the opponent they had been preparing for.
Our change log has the sequence. On August 29, Martin Kozák vs Christian Echols appeared in the middleweight slot. On September 2, Colton Loud vs Christian Natividad appeared at flyweight. Only on September 3 did the bouts they replaced come off the board: Kozák was originally matched with Juan Cabrera, the 9-1 Bolivian, and Loud with Frank da Silva Castro.
The replacements landed before the cancellations were published, which is the usual order of things on this show. Contender Series matchmaking runs out of a pool rather than a card. Fighters are slotted into a Tuesday, moved to another Tuesday, and occasionally dropped from the season, and none of it is announced with the ceremony the UFC gives a Fight Night reshuffle.
The clearest example of how fluid the season is sits one week later. Camila Reynoso, 9-1 out of Argentina, was booked against Hailai Wushamo, 10-1 out of China, on Contender Series 92 for September 15. That fight was cancelled on September 3. Reynoso is now down for Contender Series 94 on September 29 against Aieza Ramos Bertolso, a different opponent three weeks further out, and Wushamo has nothing on our calendar at all.
This card is the season's outlier
Ten Contender Series shows sit on our calendar between August 11 and October 13. Five of them have had no card changes at all. DWCS 91 has had five: three bouts added, two cancelled. No other card in that stretch has had more than one of each.
That matters more here than it would on a numbered card. A Contender Series fighter gets one night, in front of one man, with a contract as the only prize, and the opponent he prepared for is the entire shape of the audition. Kozák spent his camp preparing for a 9-1 Bolivian and will instead face a 10th Planet black belt whose eight wins have all come inside the first round. Loud prepared for one flyweight and gets an unbeaten LFA regular who has taken his last four to the scorecards.
What it does to the price
The market noticed. Kozák was priced around -417 when his fight was first listed and is out to roughly -474 now, the biggest move on the card in either direction. In the welterweight bout, which was never touched by the reshuffle, money has gone the other way: Reginaldo Geraldo Jr. opened around a coin flip against Isaac Moreno and is now a +118 underdog.
None of this is scandal. Prospects get hurt, visas fall through, and a promotion that runs a talent audition every Tuesday for three months is going to have weeks where the pieces move. But the Contender Series is the one part of the UFC calendar where a card change never gets a press release, and the fighters it moves are the ones with the least leverage to complain about being moved.
